Join us for our Lenten Journey
Lenten Weekly Wednesday Worship @ 7pm on Facebook Live
Each of us is created a precious and holy vessel of embodied love. We have been through a harrowing time since last Lent that has shattered our sense of wholeness–body, mind, and spirit–like a glass vessel fractured into pieces. We are hoping to make this Lent a “season of recovery” for our physical, communal, mental, intellectual, and environmental health. We will explore the healing narratives of Jesus from the gospel of Matthew. Here is an overview.
February 17 - Ash Wednesday: Shattered
Matthew 11: 28-30
February 24 - Lent 1: Treasure (Physical Health)
Matthew 8: 1-4, Matthew 8: 16-17
March 3 - Lent 2: Safe Keeping (Community/Economic Health)
Matthew 8: 5-13
March 10 - Lent 3: Stories (Mental Health)
Matthew 9: 27-33
March 17 - Lent 4: Different Pictures (Intellectual Health)
Matthew 9: 18-26
March 24 - Lent 5: Restoration (Environmental Health)
Matthew 8: 18-27
Thursday April 1 – Maundy Thursday Worship
Lenten Giving Calendar
The usual practice for lent is to give something up. Why not give up something that others need. Please look at this Lenten Giving Calendar and give what you can. You can leave the items in the blue bin outside the church door. To get the calendar go to the newsletter link at top of page.
Mission work
We will be helping the Susan B. Anthony domestic violence families again this year with the adopt a family program. It will be completely different this year. We will be asking for gift cards in the amount of $25.00 increments (or whatever you can afford) to local stores in and around town. The cards can be dropped off at the church on Sunday mornings or noon on Fridays, call ahead to make sure someone is here. They need to be at the church no later then November 15th so we can get them to Susan B. Anthony by Friday the 20th. This will allow the parent to do the shopping themselves for their own child making it that much more special for them. Join us in making Christmas a special time for these children who are victims of domestic violence.
We are heading back into the church
November 1
we will be heading back into church as it is getting too cold for outdoor services. There are special protocols to follow in order to attend church service.
In order to maintain proper social distancing protocol you must sign up to attend worship services. This may be done by calling the church or clicking the sign up button in the email you will be sent weekly. The sign up will be closed at noon on Friday or before if it fills up. Please make sure you sign up as we don't want to turn anyone away but to be safe we only have so many spots to fill to follow our protocol.
The sanctuary will be open at 9:45 a.m. and service will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude around 10:30 a.m.
When you sign up to attend church service you are agreeing to the following:
- Have your temperature taken upon arrival. If temperature is above 100.4 degrees you will be asked to worship from home
- Wear a mask at all times. A limited number of masks will be available if you need one. Pastor Jackie may remove her mask for worship, only is safely distanced and unable to be heard with her mask on
- Practice social distancing guidelines put in place.
- Refrain from congregating before, during and after the service.
- Notify us if you contract COVID
Mission work
Join us on September 27th during church service to help put together Hygiene kits for the church world service. Items needed are:
One hand towel measuring approx 15"x28", one wash cloth, one wide tooth comb, fingernail clippers, one bath size bar soap, one toothbrush in package, and 10standard size band-aids
Worship on the Green
Beginning July 12!
(weather permitting)
If you are comfortable, please come,
Bring your own blanket, chair, food, coffee…
We will worship (physically distant) together.
If you are uncomfortable, don’t worry,
We will still bring you worship online.
Below are the Guidelines that everyone will need to follow for us to worship outside.
WCCC Outdoor Services Policy
Hi Everyone, I hope you have been well. It has been too long since we have been together in-person! Covid-19 has stretched us and kept us separated by space but not by the Spirit. We have done what we can to “be the church” in these times and proved to ourselves that the church is not a building. We have lived by the golden rule, “You must love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:39 and in these times, loving our neighbor has meant staying apart.
As we try to come back together to in-person worship, keeping everyone safe has been our major priority and concern as we plan our first moves forward. We are aware that even with 6 or 12-foot distancing, in an enclosed area, infected air, even just released by one person, can spread to the entire room, given enough time. For this reason, we have decided to try worship on the Green for July, August, and possibly September.
Our team has come together, using CDC, State, and Denominational guidelines to establish our own guidelines for a no-contact, touch-free worship service for Winchester Center Congregational Church. Depending on the number of cases in our town, we may have to go back online only for a time. As mentioned before, your safety and the safety of your loved ones is our first priority. As we progress by adding outdoor worship in addition to our online service , and moving forward to service in the sanctuary in the future, we ask that you please follow the CDC guidelines of washing hands often for 20 seconds, social distancing 6 feet, and staying home if you are sick or in a high risk category. We will continue to record and have available worship to those not able or ready to attend in person service.
Worship will be held on the Winchester Center Green (weather permitting) beginning July 12, 2020 until further notice. For questionable weather, check our Facebook page or call the church directly at (860) 379-8900. Pastor Jackie Hall, Deacons, and volunteers will be there to assist in making you comfortable with the new guidelines.
To be as touch-free as possible, we are advocating a “Bring Your Own” policy. We ask that you please bring your own chair, water, hand sanitizer, snacks and Bible. (Please let us know if you do not have a Bible. We will furnish you with a Bible to take home) Communion will also have to be "Bring Your Own".
- Masks will be required. A limited number of masks will be available if you need one. Pastor Jackie Hall may remove her mask for worship if distanced more than 12 feet from parishioners.
- Families may sit together distanced a minimum of 8 feet from other families or parishioners. Distance and spacing guidelines will be provided.
- Children must sit with parent or guardian at all times. There will be no Sunday School but a children's message for all children of God will continue to be a part of the service. (children will remain seated with family)
- Bulletins will be provided via email prior to the worship service. A limited number of bulletins will be available in a basket for those with no internet access.
- There will be no singing due to spread of droplets. Music will be provided by organist Gretchen Gowen, and/or solo musicians.
- Offerings should be inserted in the collection box or mailed to WCCC, PO Box 200, Winchester Center, Ct 06094
- The bathrooms will not be open to the public (CDC requires cleaning between each use) so we ask that you use your home facilities prior to coming to the church.
- Please do not enter church building unless absolutely necessary.
By attending worship on the Green, you are agreeing to these guidelines and to notifying us in the event that you contract the Covid-19 virus.
The Church is not the building. It is the people who come together to be the body of Christ.

ANYONE WISHING TO HELP OUT WITH THE HURRICANE DORIAN DISASTER PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE BELOW
The images of the impact of Hurricane Dorian keep coming in. This storm was a slow moving Category 5 storm as it crawled through the Bahamas leaving whole sections of communities leveled by wind and waves. It continues its progress up the east coast bringing rain measured in feet, storm surges and wind damage in its path. We are keeping an eye on the storm and the rescue and recovery efforts that are only now beginning to be underway. Your gifts to our denomination are already at work as initial aid and assessment are happening through our ministries and ministry partners. Keep an eye on our national UCC Disaster Ministries webpage (https://www.ucc.org/disaster) for updates on efforts and on ways you can help.
As a reminder, when we are touched by the images we see, we want to help in as tangible a way as possible. Often that help comes in ways that compound the problems as people arrive without coordination or invitation or people send items that are not needed into a disaster zone that is not prepared to receive, store or distribute them. Disaster response is a coordinated effort between government, non-profit and faith based institutions. They have built relationships and networks over the years that allow rescue and recovery to happen in as fluid and effective a way as the disaster allows to be possible. And the best way to help is to send funds through the agencies and organizations you trust. Your gifts to our national UCC Disaster Ministries can be used immediately. And, because of your ongoing support of our denomination, 100% of your gift is sent where the need is greatest in coordination with all these partners.
You can donate directly on the UCC website listed above. Or send checks to your Conference office with a note in the memo line that the funds are for disaster relief.
Faithfully,
Don Remick

HOPE SHOE CUTTING PARTY A BIG SUCCESS Our shoe cutting party was a big success even though the weather was not on our side. We cut out 35 pair of shoe patterns, had some wonderful soup and sandwiches and good fellowship. Some people took home the patterns to cut out and bring back so we should have about 50 patterns to send off to the processing plant in N.C. who will then send them over to Uganda where the shoes will be made and delivered to the children in the villages. I want to thank all those who helped support this effort by bringing in milk cartons, your old jeans or making items of food.
